Saints Go Marching Home
Lynden Lions
34 (9-2) (9-1) Interlake Saints 0 (6-5)
The Lynden Lions made up for a sub-par performance last week against
the Squalicum Storm by defeating the Interlake Saints 34-0 Saturday
night at Civic Stadium. The Lion spread offense fully clicked for
the first time since they played Anacortes on October 24th, and the
defense forced six turnovers against a talented Interlake team.
After recovering their own muffed kick-off return, the Lions
established the line of scrimmage as they ran the ball efficiently
on a 9 minute drive that gave them a lead they would never give up.
Game Recap: For the first time this season, Lynden faced a
team that ran a spread offense of their own. On their first
defensive possession, the Lions forced a three and out by putting
pressure on Interlake quarterback Matt Malos. From their own
territory, the Saints tried a fake punt that was stopped inches
short of the first down. On the ensuing possession the Lions scored
on Jr. Jordan Hastings’ touchdown scramble right through the
heart of the Saint’s defense.
In the second quarter it was more of the same for the Lions and
Saints. Driving deep into the Lion redzone, Interlake once again
went for it on fourth and four only to be turned away by a stout
Lynden defense. On the Lions last possession of the half,
Hastings connected with 6 ft. 4 in. Jr. (WR) Ryan Seto on
a beautifully thrown fade route in the corner of the endzone to give
the Lions a 21-0 lead.
The second half never saw a shift in momentum for Lynden or
Interlake. Every time the Saints mounted a drive, they turned the
ball over against a Lynden defense that forced five interceptions
and one fumble recovery. In addition, Hastings connected on
a 64 yard post route over the middle to Jr. (WR) Blair Bomber
that made the score 28-0 and sealed the fate of an overmatched
Interlake team.
Random Notes: The Lions (9-2) will play in the 2A State
Quarterfinals this Friday at 7 p.m. for the third consecutive week
at Civic Stadium against the Blaine Borderites (7-4 Overall.) The
Lions and Borderites played October 3rd at Rollie DeKoster Field.
Lynden won the game 25-3 after leading 6-3 going into the half. The
Lions were plagued by three fumbles in the first half before blowing
out the Borderites in the second half. As most of you have hopefully
noticed, the newsletter has been sent out on Tuesday this week. The
lyndenfootball.com staff would like to keep it this way for the
remainder of the season as it gives Seto and I more time to confirm
stats and edit our work.
Stay tuned as always on Friday for a comprehensive game preview as
the Lynden Lions have reached the 2A State Quarterfinals for the 3rd
consecutive year.
