Lions Calm the Storm
Lynden Lions 34 (9-1) (8-0) Squalicum Storm 14 (6-5)
(4-3)
Saturday
night displayed yet another Lynden Lion victory against the Squalicum
Storm. The Storm came out fired up and took an early lead in the first
quarter. Lynden was able to find its groove on offense and scored early
in the second quarter that seemed to calm the Storm. The Lions then went
off scoring 4 more unanswered touchdowns helping them walk away with a
34-14 victory. This win puts the Lions into the first round of the state
playoffs where they will face a very talented Black Hills squad on
Saturday.
Game Recap: The first quarter did not go
too well for the Lions as they allowed 7 points but were unable to
deliver any. It looked a bit like Déjà vu from last year’s scare in
which Lynden trailed 7-0 at half. But it seemed the memory of that
frightening game was enough to ignite the Lions in the second quarter as
they scored 21 unanswered points. Scoring first was Sr. QB Jordan
Hastings on a two yard run capping off a 67-yard drive. Five
minutes later Sr. RB/LB Brett Bajema plunged into the end zone
from 9 yards out. Jr. LB Roman Reyna then intercepted
a pass to give the ball back to Lynden at
midfield with less than two minutes to go in the half. Jordan
Hastings took advantage of this stolen possession scoring on a
49-yard touchdown dash; giving the Lions a 21-7 lead and a boost of
momentum heading into the second half.
In the second half
the Lions built on their second quarter offensive performance by scoring
early in the third quarter. The score came by a short screen pass to
Sr. WR/DE Ryan Seto who turned it into a 66-yard scamper to the end
zone. This score gave the Lions a 27-7 lead going into the fourth
quarter. In the fourth, Lynden was able to find the end zone one more
time with Hastings diving for a touchdown from 1-yard out. With
the Lions now having a comfortable 34-7 lead, they were able to allow
some of the second string to get some postseason action. Squalicum, on
the other hand, wasn’t about to give up and scored late on a
hook-and-latter. They then successfully completed an onside kick,
however, it was too little too late for the Storm who were unable to
score on this possession. The Lions were able to come away with a 34-14
victory and a birth to the first round of the state playoffs.
In this game
there were a few performances that should be mentioned. Sr. QB Jordan
Hastings had an excellent game both on the ground and in the air. He
was able to complete 10 of 14 passes for 182 yards and was able to rush
for 124 yards on 16 carries averaging nearly 8 yards per carry.
Defensively, Sr. DB/WR Nolan Gudde displayed his talents in the
secondary recording 10 tackles including 1 tackle for loss, 4 assist
tackles, and a recovered fumble.
