Lynden Stumbles, Then Advances
Lynden Lions 21(8-2) (8-1) Squalicum Storm 7 (5-6) (4-5)
The Lynden Lions were given a serious test in their
state play-in game Saturday afternoon against the Squalicum Storm. The
Lions trailed 7-0 going into the locker room after a first half where
the offense stalled, and the defense kept the game within reach.
Lynden’s offense came alive in the second half as Jr. (WR) Blair
Bomber made two game changing plays to seal the victory for the
Lions. With the win, the Lions play Saturday night at Civic Stadium
against the winner of the Interlake vs. North Mason contest Tuesday
night.
Game Recap: The Lions weren’t able to put
any consistent offensive drives together early as they failed to score
in the first half for the first time this season. After a Brandon
Sanford touchdown by the Storm with seconds remaining in the second
quarter, the Lions went into the locker room trailing 7-0.
The 3rd quarter began with the defense
trading punches while neither team could sustain a drive. (QB)
Jordan Hastings threw an interception in the endzone midway through
the quarter that gave the Storm a boost of momentum and sent their crowd
into a frenzy. However, after forcing a three and out, Hastings
responded by throwing a beautiful 28 yard touch pass over Squalicum’s
secondary to Blair Bomber in the corner of the endzone.
With the score tied 7-7 heading into the 4th
quarter, the Hastings to Bomber connection struck again after a 20 yard
touchdown reception that gave the Lions a 14-7 lead. The Squalicum
offense was stagnant throughout the 4th quarter, and Hastings
sealed the victory with a 1 yard touchdown run with just minutes
remaining. While Saturday’s game was no masterpiece offensively or
defensively for Lynden, it does put them in great position heading into
the 2A State Playoffs.
Saturday’s contest featured a number of impressive
performances by the Lions on the defensive side of the ball. On a day
when the offense stumbled, the performances of Sr. LB Taylor
Creighton, Sr. DE David Gaylord, Jr. DE Ryan Seto, and Jr. DT Jake
Christianson helped seal the win for the Lions. Creighton
was all over the field as he recorded 9 tackles, 15 assists, and a sack
late in the 4th quarter. Lynden’s defensive ends also played
a huge part in the win as Seto recorded 10 tackles, 6 assists,
and 2 tackles for loss. Gaylord had 5 tackles, 9 assists, and
harassed the Squalicum quarterback all afternoon. Finally,
Christianson enjoyed the finest game of his young career on his way
6 tackles, 7 assists, and a bone-jarring sack.
