Trying to Quiet Storm
The Lynden
Lions (7-2 Overall) (7-1 NWC) will travel to Civic Stadium tomorrow at
2:00 p.m. to play as the “home” team against the Squalicum Storm (5-5
Overall) (4-5 NWC). The weather report is for wet and windy conditions
tomorrow afternoon as the Lions are aiming to shut down Squalicum’s
power running game. It is win or go home from here on out as playoff
football has arrived throughout the state of Washington.
Game Capsule: The Lions and Storm last took
the field at Civic Stadium on September 13th in the second
game of the year for both teams. Lynden pounded Squalicum on the ground
and through the air on their way to a 32- 6 victory. The Storm couldn’t
even manage to pick up a first down until the second half of play.
Tomorrow, the Lions are looking to execute the same game-plan as
terrible weather may force them to pound the Storm through their running
attack. Sr. (RB/DE) David Gaylord should get a lot of touches
now that he’s fully healed from an ankle sprain in Week 8.
What’s At Stake: For both teams, a spot in
the state playoffs is on the line. The Storm will be taking a “we have
nothing to lose” attitude towards their first playoff football game in
school history. On the other hand, the Lions have been through these
games before, and they should be calm and ready to execute come 2:00
p.m. tomorrow. Every mistake in the postseason is magnified, and the
Lions and Storm will want to limit their turnovers because it could cost
someone their season.
What to Expect: In September 13th’s
drubbing, the Storm stubbornly stuck to an ineffective rushing game in
the first half. They failed to make a first down and were down big by
halftime. In the second half, their offense sustained more success as
they mixed in the run and pass well on a couple drives. Tomorrow, look
for Squalicum to open up their playbook to try to pull the biggest upset
in their school’s short history. For Lynden, it will be more of the
same Saturday afternoon. Their mix of the run and pass this season has
worked magnificently, and a solid defense has helped them gain the top
spot in the 2A portion of the Northwest Conference.
Notes: Sr. (OL) Gunnar Groothuis made his
much-anticipated return against the Burlington Edison Tigers last week.
He earned offensive linemen of the week honors on his way to
overpowering the Burlington defensive line. Jr. (QB) Jordan
Hastings’ solid 2008 campaign includes completing 121 of 212 passes
for 1449 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushing for 525 yards and 9
touchdowns. He’s turned into one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks
the Lions have seen in years.
