Earn 5th Shutout Victory of the Season
Lynden Lions 31 (11-1) Sequim Wolves 0 (10-2)
The Lions Saturday night were able to come out on
top with a huge win against Sequim. Their defense came up big causing 5
turnovers in the game and leaving a 0 on the scoreboard for the Wolves.
The win secures the Lions with a trip to the Tacoma Dome this Saturday
where they will face the Archbishop Murphy Wildcats. The Wildcats gave
the Lions their only loss of the season in the first game of the year at
Qwest Field. The Lions will be seeking some revenge as they travel to
the Tacoma Dome for the 7th time in 9 years.
Game Recap: The first quarter of Saturday’s
contest was left at 0-0 and looked like neither team could get anything
going in the terrible weather conditions. It led you to think that
whoever scored first would come out on top. The Sequim Wolves seemed
like they were going to be that team as they came very close to finding
the end zone early in the game, but the Lions defense stiffened.
Sequim’s first offensive series of the second quarter led to a Jr. LB
Roman Reyna strip and fumble recover for the Lions on the 11yd
line. This led to a 4yd touchdown run by Sr. QB/DB Jordan Hastings.
The next drive for the Wolves resulted in another fumble at the 33yd
line. A couple plays later Sr. WR/DB Blair Bomber hauled in 33yd
touchdown catch from Hastings. The 1st half ended up
with a 14-0 lead for the Lions who were able to capitalize on two costly
turnovers by Sequim.
On the first offensive series of the second half
Sequim was looking to get things back on track and make it a ball game.
However, Sequim fumbled once again and the Lions recovered their 3rd
fumble on the night, giving them the ball on the 3yd line. The Lions
weren’t able to punch it in, and were forced to kick a 20yd field goal
by So. K Santiago Lopez. This made it a 3 possession game and
gave the Lions a little comfort room. But with 10 minutes left to play
in the 3rd quarter the score was only 17-0 giving Sequim
plenty of time to come back. The Lions defense, however, came up big
and didn’t allow Sequim any chance of mounting a late rally. Late in
the 3rd quarter Hastings reeled off a 52 yd. touchdown
that seemed to seal the deal for the Lions. Then with 3 minutes left in
the game Sr. QB Nyles Varner scored on a 6 yd quarterback keeper
making the score 31-0 and that’s how the game would finish.
In the game the Lions were able to rely on the
defense to come out with big stops. They forced Sequim to seven 3 and
outs and also held Sequim to 4 first downs on the night, 2 in each
half. This solid performance by the D led Lynden to come away with a
victory against a talented Sequim Wolves squad. The Lions will need to
build on this defensive performance if they want to make another trip to
the state championship with a win against a very good Archbishop Murphy
Offense.
