Lynden Rolls Over the Mariners
Lynden
Lions 56 (5-1) (4-0) Sehome Mariners 0 (0-6) (0-4)
Lynden scored quick and often Friday Night
during their 56-0 routing of the Sehome Mariners. The Lions dominated
both offensively and defensively in the game, putting up great numbers
on both sides of the ball. With the victory the Lions have remained
undefeated in the NWC and still remain the top contender in the race for
the conference's top Class 2A seed to the postseason. Coming away with
one of the most lopsided victories in the school’s history the Lions
have a wave of momentum they hope to carry with them heading into their
final three games of the regular season.
Game Recap: The Lions came out dominating,
scoring with ease on their first offensive possession. Scoring was Sr.
QB/DB Jordan Hastings on a 10-yard run. Hastings then connected with Sr.
WR/DE Ryan Seto on a 55-yard catch and dash to the end zone making the
score 14-0 to end the first quarter. In the second quarter the Lions
kept rolling scoring 3 more times on the Mariners. Scoring in the
quarter was Seto on a 4-yard pass, Sr. RB/DB Brett Bajema on a 7-yard
run, and Sr. WR/QB/DE Nyles Varner on a beautifully thrown and caught
37-yard post pattern. Lynden’s defense also dominated the half keeping
the goose egg on the board for Sehome and making the score 35-0 going
into half.
In second half the Lions remained confident on
offense and dominate on defense. Opening up the scoring was Sr. WR/DB
Blair Bomber on a 20-yard run giving the Lions a 42-0 lead. At about
this time most of the Lions starters were benched, giving the second and
third string some time on varsity. Lynden’s second string was able to
continue what the varsity started scoring twice in the half and
maintaining the shutout. With the first score coming from a 21-yard run
by Varner from the QB position. Jr. RB/DB Joey Garcia then scored in the
fourth quarter on a exciting 19-yard run in which he miraculously was
able to break away from the Sehome defense and get into the end zone.
This score capped off the Lions scoring and ended the game. The Lions
walked away with a convincing 56-0 victory at Civic Stadium.
The night was full of great performances on both
sides of the ball. Defensively, both linebackers played exceptional, Sr.
LB Eric Conner recorded 7 tackles and 6 assists and Jr. LB Roman Reyna
recorded 8 tackles and 4 assists. Offensively, Varner scored both
receiving and rushing, helping him attain the “Offensive Player of the
Week.” As a team the Lions also played great amassing about 440 yards of
offense and holding Sehome to 73 yards of total offense on 39 plays.
Lynden will hope to have another great team performance on their
homecoming against a tough Mt. Baker Mountaineer squad.
