Bomber, Gaylord, Defense Hold Mountaineers in Check
Lynden Lions 26 (5-2) (5-1) Mt. Baker Mountaineers 6 (2-5)
(2-5)
The Mt. Baker Mountaineers were taught last Friday
night of the difficulty running the ball against Lynden’s defensive
unit. On 13 carries, the Mountaineers had a staggering -27
rushing yards. This equates to just over -2 yards of offense every time
Baker ran the football. After the Lions took control on a pair of Blair
Bomber touchdowns midway through the first half, the Mountaineers lack
of a running game on a rain-soaked playing surface kept them from
mounting any sort of serious comeback.
Game Recap: The sloppy conditions of Friday
night’s game took each team some time to get accustomed to. Mt. Baker
held Lynden scoreless in the first quarter, and until a Bomber
interception on the Baker 33 yard-line the momentum laid with the home
team. However, Bomber soon pulled down a sixteen yard touchdown
reception from Jr. QB Jordan Hastings to give the Lions a 7-0
lead. After forcing a three-and-out, Bomber struck again after
being sprung by Sr. (RB/DE) David Gaylord’s bone-jarring block
that led to a 64 yard punt return for a touchdown. Gaylord then
capped off the twenty points of scoring in the second quarter on a one
yard touchdown run.
Leading 20-0 at halftime, the Lions kept the Baker
pass-happy offense in check in the second half as they could only manage
one touchdown early in the fourth quarter. In addition, the Lions were
able to pile on the scoring as Gaylord hauled in a beautifully
thrown 26 yard touchdown pass from Hastings that made the score
26-0 and essentially sealed the Mountaineers fate.
Recording possibly his finest game of the year,
Sr. David Gaylord recorded 105 yards of total offense while scoring
one touchdown on the ground and hauling in one through the air.
Hastings threw the ball a career-high 34 times last Friday on his
way to completing 21 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Jr.
(LB/RB) Brett Bajema also turned in a nice performance while
recording five tackles and an interception returned to the house that
was called back on a bogus pass-interference call.
