Lions Produce Third Shutout
Victory
Lynden
Lions 31 (6-1) (6-0) Mt. Baker Mountaineers 0 (5-2) (4-2)
Coming
together as a defense the Lions produced their third shutout of the
season in their 31-0 homecoming victory against the Mt. Baker
Mountaineers. Offensively, it took awhile for Lynden to find their
rhythm. However, once they found it they didn’t stop, scoring 31
unanswered points. This win secured Lynden with the top spot in the
league at 6-0, however they are still in the battle with
Burlington-Edison for the #1 seed which will be decided when they meet
on October 28th. Until then the Lions have to face the
Anacortes Seahawks this Friday for Lynden’s Senior night.
Game Recap: The beginning of the first
quarter was slow for the Lions as each offensive drive ended with a
turnover. However, with 1:07 left on the clock, Sr. QB Jordan Hastings
connected with Sr. WR/DE Ryan Seto on a 94-yard catch and run giving the
Lions a 7-0 lead heading into the second quarter and breaking open the
scoring for Lynden. The next quarter began with a Sr. WR/DB Blair Bomber
interception. The Lions capitalized on this stolen possession by
marching down to the Mt. Baker 10 yard line and adding 3 more points to
the board with a So. K Santiago Lopez field goal. Lynden then remained
on stride putting together a five-play scoring drive, capped off by a
32-yard touchdown dash by Sr. RB/DL Jake Christianson. This great run by
Christianson gave the Lions a 17-0 lead going into the second half.
In the second half the Lions were able to maintain
their dominance on defense allowing Mt. Baker only five first downs on
the night, and sustaining a shutout. The offense of the Lions, which
earned 23 first downs, also played fairly good in the second half. To
begin the scoring the Lions pulled out an exciting trick play in the
third quarter. This play consisted of Bomber faking the sweep (drawing
the attention from almost all of the Mountaineer defenders) and dishing
the ball off to Seto for a 32-yard touchdown. This perfectly executed
play gave the Lions a 24-0 lead. To cap off the scoring for Lynden
Bomber struck again, this time on the receiving end, catching a 23 yard
pass from Hastings in the beginning of the fourth quarter. This allowed
some of the second string to get playing time. They utilized their time
well by sustaining the shutout and helping the Lions walk away with a
31-0 homecoming victory.
Recording the best game of his career, Sr. Ryan
Seto hauled in 5 catches for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns. Having a career
game on offense as well was Sr. Jake Christianson who had a brilliant
32-yard touchdown run and averaged a whopping 11 yards per carry. Also
to be noted was the Junior Varsity’s 35-0 victory yesterday against the
Mountaineers which put them at 4-2 on the season and #1 in the JV
league.
