Lions
Trying To Advance
The Lynden
Lions (8-2 Overall) (7-1 NWC) will travel to Civic Stadium for the
second consecutive week to play a “home” game against the Interlake
Saints (6-4 Overall) Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The Lions are coming off a
21-7 victory last week that had them fighting for their playoff lives
deep into the 2nd half. The Lions will try to bounce back
this week with a more consistent performance offensively and defensively
against Interlake. Both teams run an up-tempo spread offense that will
make Saturday night’s contest well worth the price of admission.
Game Capsule: Last week, the Lions defense
played its best game of the season. With the offense struggling and the
season on the line, Sr. DT Aaron Mattox and Jr. DE Ryan Seto
made big plays to keep the Lion’s hopes alive. This week, however, the
offense will have to perform early and often as they face an Interlake
team capable of putting up a lot of points. Interlake features a
variety of playmakers at the quarterback, running back, and wide
receiver positions. Jr. RB Brett Kirshner led the league in
rushing as a sophomore and is rumored to have offers from multiple
division one teams. In addition, maxpreps.com has Interlake quarterback
Matt Malos down as averaging a staggering 291 yards passing per game.
What’s At Stake: The opening round of the
state playoffs is a do or die situation for every Washington high
school. Interlake and Lynden both have a state championship on their
mind after making it this late into the season. Each team will be
fueled with adrenaline and ready to win a spot in the 2a quarterfinals
come Saturday night.
What to Expect: Points, points, and more
points. While the Lions and Saints both feature a solid defense, each
team runs and explosive offense that is extremely difficult to contain.
Saturday night’s contest may go right down to the wire as Lynden and
Interlake feature some of the best playmakers in all of the 2A
classification. With both teams so similar in talent and offensive
style, Saturday’s winner will probably be determined by who wins the
turnover battle.
Fun Fact: This will be the first contest
between Lynden and Interlake in the history of either school’s football
program.
