Lions Earn
Shutout Victory!
Lynden
Lions 31 (3-1) (3-0) Ferndale Golden Eagles 0 (2-2) (1-2)
The
Lynden Lions made a statement Friday night against their rival the
Ferndale Golden Eagles. The Lions started the game slow on offense and
were unable to score in the first quarter. However, once Lynden found
their rhythm they never stopped. Scoring 31 unanswered points and
holding the Eagles to a goose egg. Lynden took away a 31-0 victory at
home and ended the Eagles 4-year winning streak. The Lions will try and
build on this success next week as they travel to Blaine to take on a
very talented Borderite team.
Game Recap: The first quarter of Friday
night’s match-up was a little unsettling as miscues lead to a scoreless
start for both teams. It looked out to be a game that could go down to
the wire. Lynden, however, wasn’t about to let that happen. They finally
started to click on offense midway through the second quarter developing
a great offense drive. This led to Sr. QB Jordan Hastings juking and
jiving his way to the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown run. On the next
series Sr. RB/DB Brett Bajema intercepted a Ferndale Pass giving the
Lions possession with four minutes left in the quarter. Six plays later
the Lions capitalized when Hastings Found Sr. WR/DB Blair Bomber for a
7-yard TD pass. Lynden’s defense displayed control holding Ferndale to
29 yards and helping the Lions take a 14-0 lead heading into the second
half.
Momentum stuck with the Lions as they opened up
the half scoring early in the third quarter. Bajema punched into the end
zone from 3 yards out giving Lynden a 21-0 lead. Sr. WR/DB Blake Groves
then snatched a Ferndale pass which set Lynden up with good field
position. This led to So. K Santiago Lopez booting in a 25-yard field
goal to make it 24-0. Bomber finished the scoring with a 46-yard catch
and run giving the Lions a 31-0 lead. The Lions’ defense then took over
holding the shutout and never allowing Ferndale to come within 30 yards
of the end zone. Lynden’s defense also only allowed Ferndale just 120
yards of offense on the night. This helped the Lions run away with a
31-0 victory and a pinch of pride against their cross-town rivals.
Pulling off another great victory in the NWC, the
Lions have moved to 3-0 in league play and 3-1 overall. In the win a
couple performances really stood out. On offense, Bomber was once again
very electric with 6 catches for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns. Sr. OL/DE
Matthew VanVoorst filled in very well at defensive end for the injured
Conner Anderson and produced 5 tackle, 3 assists, a sack, a QB harass
and a deflection. The Lions are hoping to build on this momentum and
continue their winning ways this Friday against a tough opponent in the
Blaine Borderites.
