Lions Win League Championship
Lynden
Lions 20 (8-1) (7-0) Burlington Edison Tigers 0 (7-2)
(5-2)
The
Lynden Lions claimed the Northwest Conference title with a 20-0 win over
the Burlington Edison Tigers last Friday night at Burlington. The win
gave the Lions their 4th shutout of the season, which is the
most since 1960. The 1960 season was led by the “Legendary” John
Clark.
Game Recap: This game started surprisingly
slow most likely due to the strong winds. The Tigers received the ball
to begin the game and started out with a decent drive, but ended with a
punt. The Lions drove most of the field resulting with a 22 yard field
goal by So. K Santiago Lopez. This gave the Lions a 3-0 nothing
lead at the end of the first quarter. On the ensuing kickoff the Lions
recovered the fumble caused by Jr. WR/DE Connor Anderson. Then
on the next play Sr. QB/DB Jordan Hastings connected with Sr.
WR/DB Blair Bomber on a 35 yard pitch and catch that brought the
Lions down to the Tigers 1 yard line. Then Hastings scored on a
1 yard quarterback keep up the middle. This made the score 10-0 and it
remained 10-0 going into halftime.
In the 3rd quarter neither team had
much going for them on offense. The Lions were able to muster a couple
first downs, but nothing close to a scoring drive. The Lions defense
was able to record 5 straight 3 and outs in the league championship game
playing probably their best defensive game of the season. The Lions
didn’t score until 8 minutes left in the game when So. K Santiago
Lopez kicked a 23 yard field goal giving the Lions a 13-0 lead. On
the next offensive series for Lynden Sr. QB/DB Jordan Hastings
scored his 2nd rushing touchdown of the game from 4 yards
out. This made the score 20-0 Lions with 2 minutes left making it look
very bleak for any chance of a comeback from Burlington. That’s how the
game ended with an impressive shutout by the Lions crowning themselves
as #1 in the NWC.
Notes: The Lynden JV team won 27-7 against
Burlington yesterday. This ensured them another league win and also a
6-2 record to end the season. They placed #1 in league and their only 2
losses were to ATM 21-14 and Ferndale 17-12.
