Lynden Wins 2A Championship
Lynden Lions 41(7-2) (7-1) Burlington Edison Tigers 23
(8-1)(8-1)
The Lynden Lions proved their supremacy in the 2A
realm of the Northwest Conference with a 41-23 win over the Burlington
Edison Tigers last Friday night at Rollie Dekoster Field. The Lions
knocked off Burlington after a heartbreaking 28-21 defeat last year in
overtime. Revenge truly was sweet for the Lions as their commanding
victory earned them the top seed heading into the 2A playoffs.
Game Review: The Lions were out to prove
their dominance by starting the game off strong with a forced fumble and
recovery during their first defensive series. This put the offense in
good field position, and Jordan Hastings capitalized with a 27
yard run on their first offensive play. However, the Tigers answered
with a 32 yard field goal on their next drive. In the 2nd
quarter the Tigers scored on 4 yard run, giving Burlington their only
lead of the game. The Lions quickly came back with solid play on
defense, and a forced fumble and recovery by Jake Christianson which he
recovered in the endzone. This gave the Lions a lead they would never
relinquish. The Lions took advantage of Burlington’s mistakes, and built
a 14-10 lead going into half.
During the beginning of the 2nd half the
Lions started to find their offensive stride. Jordan Hastings began the
3rd quarter with a 34 yard touchdown pass to Jace Bowen, and
ended the quarter off with a 4 yard touchdown scamper. This helped give
the Lions a 28-10 lead heading into the 4th quarter. The offense kept
clicking in the 4th by getting two more quick scores on
their way to racking up 35 straight points. The Tigers scored a
meaningless 4th quarter touchdown, but could not sustain a
comeback.
Taylor Creighton had a record-breaking game on D
while recording 6 tackles and 4 assists. His performance moved
Creighton into the number one spot as the leading tackler in Lynden High
School history.
The Lions will play this Saturday at Civic Field as
the home team against the winner of Tuesday’s winner of Squalicum vs.
Granite Falls.
