Lynden Lions Vying for League
Championship
The Lynden Lions (7-1) (6-0) will conclude their
regular season tonight as they travel to Burlington to take on the
Burlington Edison Tigers (7-1) (5-1). This fierce rivalry has been
heralded as the game of the year in the Northwest Conference and will
likely display a very high level of play as state playoff seeding is on
the line. Both teams have proven quite dominate in league play with the
Lions being undefeated and the Tigers having only lost one game. A
league championship is also on the line and we all know it has been a
long time since a 2A team has walked away with this title. With this in
mind it should prove to be an extremely competitive game and an exciting
end to the regular season.
Game Capsule: Burlington has proved to have
an effective running game, and after losing their starting quarterback
earlier in the season they have not been able to be as efficient in the
passing game. The Lions key to victory will be stopping this run and
also coming up big on special teams where the Tigers have shown to be
very dangerous. The Lions will also have to get their offense going
early; otherwise it could prove to be a very long night for Lynden.
What’s At Stake: Tonight’s game will have
huge playoff implications. The contest will not only determine who will
be the top 2A seed from the Northwest Conference, but also establish the
league champions. The victor will be able to enjoy a home play-in game
and postseason games located on the west-side of the state. Were as the
loser will have to travel to the east and play on the road. The
Lynden-Burlington game is also a huge rivalry, one of the biggest in the
state, and both teams seem to face off in almost every sport to hold the
top spot in the conference, so bragging rights are definitely also on
the line. This game will be huge for both playoff seeding and for a
boost of momentum heading into the postseason.
What to expect: Burlington will try and use
their wing-t to get their talented running backs to the outside of the
hashes where they will be able to utilize their speed. If Lynden’s
defense can use their own speed to fly to the ball and contain
Burlington’s backs, Burlington may have to rely on their second string
quarterback who hasn’t shown to be much of a passing threat.
Offensively, Lynden will likely try and get their running game going in
these wet conditions before letting Jr. QB Jordan Hastings make use of
his ability to find receivers downfield. If Lynden can find a good
balance between the run and pass they could be very hard to stop.
However, Burlington will be fired up playing at home trying to exact a
little revenge from their 41-23 loss to the Lions last year. Both teams
will come out fired up in this heated rivalry and it should make for an
action packed league championship game. |
