Late Run Lifts Lions
Lynden
Lions 28 (4-1) (3-0) Blaine Borderites 14 (3-2) (2-1)
The Lynden Lions were presented with a
serious test last Friday night against the Blaine Borderites. The Lions
made crucial mistakes in the first three quarters that Blaine was able
to capitalize on and going into the fourth quarter Lynden was trailing
7-14. However, the Lions weren’t about to give up the fight, rallying to
make a tremendous fourth quarter comeback and pulling away with the
victory. With the win, the Lions have moved to 4-0 in the conference and
have gained an edge in the race for the conference's top Class 2A seed
to the postseason.
Game Recap: Both teams started the game off
fairly slow, unable to produce much of anything on offense and getting
stops on defense. The Lions, however, began to click a bit on offense
late in the first quarter and put together a good drive. The drive was
capitalized with Sr. RB/DB Brett Bajema rumbling into the end zone on a
9-yard run giving the Lions a 7-0 lead. Blaine was able to answer in the
second quarter with a 97-yard run. This evened the score and shaped the
game to be a battle going into the second half.
The second half started much like the first with
little offensive production by either team and both defensive units
remaining solid. This time, however, Blaine was able to find the end
zone first punching it in from 1-yard out at the end of the third
quarter. This score gave the Borderites a 14-7 lead leading into fourth
quarter play, putting the pressure on the Lions. However, Lynden was
ready, responding with five minutes left in the fourth quarter and
putting together an 11 play 78 yard drive. Sr. QB/DB Jordan Hastings
connected with Sr. WR/DE Ryan Seto on a 2 yard jump pass at the end of
the drive to tie the game at 14-14. This sparked the Lions who exploded
at the end of the fourth.
On the next series, Blair Bomber intercepted a
pass giving the Lions possession at the Borderites 33-yard line. Lynden
took advantage of this with a 23 yard Brett Bajema touchdown run that
gave the Lions all the momentum. The next drive for Blaine resulted in
an interception by Brett Bajema on a slant. The next play Brett Bajema
scored on a 80 yard touchdown run to secure the win for Lynden. Both
teams played with a lot of heart, but it was Lynden that was able to
overcome the adversity in the end. The Lions play Friday night at Civic
Field against a beat up Sehome Mariners team.
