Borderites
Downed by Lions
Lynden Lions 21 (10-2) (9-1) Blaine Borderites 7 (7-5)
The Lynden Lions and Blaine Borderites took to the
gridiron last Friday night at 7:00 p.m. to play the 2A State
Quarterfinals in the worst playing conditions imaginable. The wind was
blowing 30 miles per hour, and it was raining sideways. The temperature
dropped to well below 40 degrees with the wind chill, and each team’s
passing game was a non-factor because of it. After going into the half
tied 7-7, Lynden made a switch at quarterback and blew the Borderites
away with a 21-7 victory.
Game Recap: Friday night’s contest between
the two elite teams of the 2A bracket of the Northwest Conference was a
grind-it-out type of game from the start. In the 1st
quarter, the Lions and Borderites traded blows until good field position
helped Lynden drive it down to the Blaine 1-yard line. Sr. (RB/DE)
David Gaylord was put in at quarterback to sneak the ball into the
endzone. However, the exchange was fumbled and Sr. (WR/DB) Jace
Baxter-Bowen recovered the ball in the endzone for Lynden’s first
score.
The rest of the first half the Lynden offense
failed to move the ball consistently as the heavy wind and rain took
away their up-tempo passing game. Before the half, Blaine RB Casey
McCabe scored on a 2 yard run that gave Blaine the momentum heading
into the half.
In the second half, the Lions opted to change
quarterbacks in order to implement a power running game. With Sr.
David Gaylord calling the signals and Jr. (S/RB) Brett Bajema in the
backfield the Lions paved a road to the 2A State Semifinals. Gaylord
and Bajema consistently pounded the Blaine defense and began ripping off
huge gains. Bajema gave the Lions the lead permanently with a 30 yard
touchdown run late in the 3rd quarter. In the 4th,
a relentless Lynden defense and a 4 yard touchdown run by Gaylord sealed
the 21-7 win for the Lions.
The Lynden offense was one dimensional for the
first time this season on Friday night against the Borderites. However,
the running game was all they needed as Gaylord rushed the ball
27 times for 157 yards and a touchdown. He also recovered a Blaine
fumble in the 2nd half. Jr. Brett Bajema made his
impact felt on the way to 76 yards rushing on 5 carries which included a
touchdown of his own. Bajema has been a standout at safety all year,
and last Friday night he made his presence felt offensively for the
first time in his career.
The Lions return to the Tacoma Dome for the 3rd
consecutive this year Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. to play the
undefeated Archbishop Murphy Wildcats. Lynden lost to Archbishop Murphy
26-15 in their first game of the season.
