Lions Survive First Round Scare
Lynden Lions 14 (10-1) Black Hills 7 (7-3)
Lynden
was put to a severe test on Saturday when they faced Black Hills in the
first round of the state playoffs. Lynden found out just how good the
Black Hill’s running back was as he carried the ball 42 times for 198
yards behind a huge offensive line. Although the Lions had trouble
stopping him for most of the game they came up with huge stops when it
counted, holding the Black Hills from reaching the end zone twice in the
fourth quarter. With these crucial stops the Lions were able to come
away with a 14-7 victory, giving Coach Curt Kramme his 10th
quarterfinal birth as Lynden’s head coach.
Game Recap: The Lions seem to start the
game off a little tentative as they tried to get used to Black Hill’s
huge offensive line and a very talented running back. The Wolves
capitalized on this apprehension marching 81 yards on a 16-play drive
that ate up 8 minutes of the first-quarter clock, and gave them the
first score of the game. Lynden wasn’t able to find its answer until
the second quarter when Sr. QB Jordan Hastings juked and jived
his way into the end zone from 17 yards out. It didn’t take much longer
after this for Lynden to find the end zone once again before the half
came to a finish. The score came by way of a 1 yard plunder into the
end zone by Hastings. This score was set up by a 49 yard pass
from Hastings to Sr. WR/DB Blair Bomber, which put the
Lions on the 1 yard line.
In the second half the Lions took the first
possession with the hope in mind that they could score early and gain
some momentum for the rest of the game. However, these hopes were
quickly shattered as Black Hills recovered a Lynden fumble on the first
play of the second half.
This
recovery gave Black Hills possession at the Lions 33. Black Hills then
continued the game the way they started it: handing the ball off to RB
Cody Peterson and eating up the game clock. This game plan took up
nearly all the third quarter with neither team doing much of anything
and the Lions clinging on to their one score lead.
The fourth quarter was a different story. Black
Hills started the quarter off with the ball
and they worked it down the field on a 20-play drive. By the time the
Wolves got it goal-to-go, nearly half the fourth quarter had expired.
Black Hills, once at the goal line, tried to run the ball twice but
Lynden’s defense remained solid only allowing them three yards. They
then tried a pass but it fell incomplete. This gave Black Hills
fourth-and-goal from the Lynden 7. Black Hills then gave the ball to
their talented running back but he was met by Sr. DB Ben VanderHoek
and a swarm of Lynden defenders stopping him at the 1-yard line. Black
Hills had only one more chance to score in the half. They brought the
ball all the way down to the Lynden 16. However, on the next run they
coughed up the ball giving Lynden possession with 2:39 left on the
clock. Lynden was then able to convert three more first downs to run
down the clock and secure its fourth consecutive trip to the
quarterfinals.
