Lions Unable to Overcome Slow
Start
The
2009 Lynden football team finished their non-conference opener with a
34-20 loss to the Archbishop Murphy Wildcats at Qwest Field last
Saturday Morning. The much anticipated opener left the Lions very
disappointed as injuries and mistakes at crucial times in the game kept
the Lions from keeping up with the tough Wildcat team. The Lions will
take this game as an eye opener, and use this loss as both motivation
and as a learning experience for the rest of the season.
Game Recap: The first quarter of last
Saturday’s match-up put the Lions down quick as the Wildcats jumped out
to a startling 14-0 lead. On the drives the Lions looked to be
overmatched in the trenches as the Wildcats made seams all over the
Lynden defense, and not helping the situation was the loss of Sr. LB
Collin Burke three minutes into the game. The offense of the Lions
resembled that of the defense and couldn’t seem to find any rhythm in
the first quarter. However, the Lions finally got something going in the
second quarter when Sr. WR/DB Blair Bomber caught a beautiful 39
yard pass from Sr. QB/DB Jordan Hastings to pull to within 12-7
with four minutes left in the half. The Wildcats then finished off the
half powering a 5 yard run in to give them a 20-7 lead.
Going into the second half the Lions were hoping
to get back on track and mount a comeback. However, the Wildcats were
not going to let the Lions come any closer and scored four minutes into
the third quarter. Lynden couldn’t seem to get anything going on offense
for the rest of the quarter and essentially sealed the Lion’s fate. The
Lions tried to rally in the forth quarter but it was clear that it was
just too late. Both Sr. RB/DL Jake Christianson and Sr.
WR/DB Blair Bomber scored in the quarter. The game ended with the
Wildcats avenging a semifinal loss to the Lions a season ago with a
score of 34-20.
There were a few individual performances that
highlighted the Lion’s 34-20 defeat. On the offensive side of the ball,
Sr. WR/DB Nolan Gudde and Sr. WR/DB Blake Groves proved
they are more then capable at the wide out position. Nolan had 4 catches
for 76 yards and Groves pulled in 2 catches for 30 yards. Defensively,
after two of the Lions linebackers were out of the game due to injury,
Eric Conner filled in very well recording 8 tackles and 6 assists.
Lynden will look to prove they are still one of
the best in the state this Friday when they will take on a talented
Squalicum Storm team that also features a strong running game. Lynden
will be without three starters in Sr. OL/LB Tyler Lingbloom,
Sr. LB Collin Burke, and Sr. DL Justin Korthuis who got
injured early in Saturday’s game. However, the Lions will work on
replacing these injured players and bounce back in a big way Friday at
home.
