Lions Can’t Recover From Slow Start
The 2008 Lynden football team opened their season
with a 26-15 loss to the Archbishop Murphy Wildcats at Terry Ennis
Memorial Stadium last Friday night. The much anticipated season opener
left the Lions driving home disappointed as mistakes at crucial times in
the game kept them from jumping all over the Wildcats. However, not all
was lost as the Lion offense improved steadily throughout the game, and
the much hyped Lion defensive unit proved they are for real.
Game Recap: The first quarter of last Friday
night’s contest put the Lions in a hole they were still a little too
inexperienced to overcome. After forcing a three and out in the
Wildcats first possession, a muffed punt by the Lion’s special teams led
to a five play, 14-yard Wildcat’s scoring drive. The rest of the first
half went in a similarly poor direction as Archbishop Murphy built a
19-0 halftime lead. The Lions offensive line struggled to protect
Jr. (QB) Jordan Hastings and the offense couldn’t get in rhythm.
After seemingly out of the contest, the Lion’s
mounted a comeback in the second half following a Wildcat’s muffed punt
return that set up a four yard Hasting’s pass to Jr. (WR/DE)
Ryan Seto on fourth down. The Lion’s defense again forced a stop
against Archbishop Murphy’s power running game. Another muffed punt by
the Lynden special teams with the score 19-7 changed the shifting
momentum and essentially sealed the Lion’s fate. However, another late
fourth quarter touchdown from Hastings to Seto on a
beautifully thrown fade route late in the fourth quarterback cut the
score to 26-15 before the final clock sounded.
There were a few individual performances that
highlighted the Lion’s 26-15 defeat. On the offensive side of the ball,
first time starter Jordan Hastings put together a solid
performance as he was 11 for 24 for 103 yards and two touchdown passes.
In addition, Ryan Seto had 3 receptions for 44 yards and both TD
receptions. Defensively, Jr. (DT/WR) Jake Christianson led the
team with eight tackles and five assists. Finally, Jr. (WR/DE) Blair
Bomber had a solid game which included seven tackles and a blocked
kick.
The Lions will look to eliminate the mistakes that
led to a tough loss to one of the state’s best teams. This Saturday
they will take on a similarly talented Squalicum Storm team that also
features a strong power running game. Look for Lynden to bounce back in
a big way next Saturday at Civic Stadium.
