Lynden Lions 38 (12-1) Archbishop Murphy Wildcats 14
(11-2)
The Lynden Lions captured their biggest win of the
season in the semifinals on Saturday as they trampled past the
Archbishop Murphy Wildcats with a 38-14 victory. The game featured a
Lions offense that clicked early and never lost their rhythm, and a
defense that remained solid all game long. This is the second time in
two years that Lynden has knocked off ATM in the semifinals helping
propel the Lions into the State Championship for the third time in the
past four years. For the State Finals the Lions will play West Valley
of Spokane (13-0) on Saturday where they will try to defend their title.
Game Recap: Trying to avenge a 34-20 week 1
loss to the Wildcats, the Lions came out with a lot of fire and marched
63 yards in 10 plays on its opening possession to take an early 7-0
lead. The score came by way of a beautifully thrown fade route by
Sr. QB Jordan Hastings to Sr. WR/DE Ryan Seto in the corner
of the endzone. However, Archbishop came right back at the Lions
answering with a 14 play, 78-yard scoring drive. The drive ate up eight
minutes of the first quarter clock and tied the score up at 7-7. Lynden
didn’t allow this scoring drive to down their morale and came right back
at the Wildcats on their next offensive possession. Hastings
busted out a 36-yard run setting up a 14-yard touchdown pass to Seto
with 2 seconds left in the quarter. This made the score-7
and gave the Lions a lead they would never relinquish.
Six minutes into the second quarter Hastings
struck again, this time on the ground, powering his way into the end
zone from the 2-yard line. The Lions had one more chance to score in
the half, which would have likely put the game away on a 37-yard strike
to Sr. WR/DB Blair Bomber in the endzone, but the ball was
knocked away by a Wildcat defender. Four plays later Archbishop
intercepted a pass near the goal line which ran out the clock to end the
half with a 21-7 Lynden lead. This interception gave ATM a bit of
momentum which they hoped would help them mount a comeback in the second
half.
Still, Lynden knew that ATM had a real chance of
mounting a comeback, for they are all too familiar with two score
comebacks, just ask Prosser. With this is mind, the Lions recognized
they needed to get a big defensive stop on ATM’s first offensive
possession. The Lions did just this, and quickly turned the momentum in
their favor. However, the Wildcats also stepped it up on D and didn’t
allow Lynden to find the endzone in the quarter. As a result the third
quarter became a battle between two defenses that played as if their
season was on the line, and the score remained 21-7 in Lynden’s favor.
The fourth quarter was a different story. The
Lions were again able to get things going on offense and mounted a drive
that was capitalized with So. K Santiago Lopez booting an 18-yard
field goal to foster a 24-7 Lynden lead. This is when Lynden began to
pull away. The Lions recovered the ball following a pooch kickoff where
Jake Christianson hammered the kick returner for the Wildcats causing
him to cough up the ball. With this recovery the Lions took over on
Archbishop Murphy's 29-yard line with just under 11 minutes to play. Two
plays later, Hastings hooked up with Bomber for a 32-yard
touchdown strike that made it 31-7. On the ensuing kickoff ATM fumbled
once again giving the Lions possession on Archbishop Murphy’s 28-yard
line. Lynden took advantage of this field position scoring again when
Sr. RB/DB Brett Bajema plowed his way into the endzone giving the
Lions a 38-7 lead. This score pretty much ensured the Lions their 12th
consecutive win and another trip to the State Championship.
The Lions will face the West Valley Eagles of
Spokane in the State Championship on Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. The
Eagles have had a very impressive season with a record of 13-0, and will
be seeking to get their first 2A state title in their School’s football
history. The Lions, on the other hand, will be trying to defend their
title and go back-to-back, which has never been done at Lynden or in 2A
history.
