Upset State Powerhouse!
Lynden Lions 21 (11-2) (7-1) Archbishop Murphy Wildcats 13 (12-1)
The Lynden Lions captured their biggest win since
the their 2006 State Championship victory last Saturday with a 21-13 win
over the undefeated Archbishop Murphy Wildcats. The win catapults the
Lions into the State Championship for the second time in the past three
years. After taking a lead early in the game, Lynden relied on its
power running game and solid defense to beat a team that hadn’t lost a
contest in over two years. With the victory, the Lions play this
Saturday for the State Championship against the Prosser Mustangs (13-0
Overall).
Game Recap: The Lions avenged a 26-15 Week 1
loss to the Wildcats last Saturday by electrifying the Tacoma Dome crowd
on the first play from scrimmage with an 80 yard touchdown pass from
Sr. (QB/RB/DE) David Gaylord to Lion speedster Jr. (WR/DB) Blair
Bomber. Bomber streaked past two defenders on his way down
the Archbishop Murphy sideline to give the Lions a 7-0 lead just seconds
into the game. Capitalizing on a shell-shocked Archbishop Murphy team,
the Lions scored on their next possession as Jr. (QB) Jordan Hastings
threw across his body and across the field to a seemingly forgotten
Gaylord who put an exclamation point on the 25 yard touchdown pass by
flattening a Wildcat defender in the end zone.
After a 47 yard C.J. Milburn touchdown run
in the 2nd quarter, the Lions responded by orchestrating
another drive where that ate up huge chunks of yards. They ended the
scoring in the first half as Bomber pulled in a 2 yard pass from
Hastings that gave Lynden a 21-7 lead. Lynden was able to make
big plays offensively in the first half that gave them an edge against
one of the most talented and well-coached teams in the state.
The second half featured a battle between two very
good, very fast defenses that played as if their careers depended on the
outcome of Saturday morning’s game. On the opening drive of the second
half, ATM marched the ball down the field and into the Lion red zone.
Poised to take the ball in for a score, Bomber jumped in front of
a slant pattern and intercepted Jake Down’s pass to shift
momentum back in Lynden’s favor.
ATM pulled closer at the beginning of the 4th
quarter to make the score 21-13 on another touchdown run by Milburn.
However, the PAT was blocked by Bomber to keep Lynden’s lead at 8
points. After trading possessions, Lynden ended ATM’s hopes to play for
a state championship with just seconds remaining when Jr. (DE/WR)
Ryan Seto sacked Wildcat quarterback Austin VanderWel on 4th
down to seal the Lynden’s 9th consecutive victory.
Lynden playmakers truly stepped up in Saturday’s
21-13 victory against one of the top-ranked teams in the state.
Bomber pulled in 7 catches for 118 yards and 2 TD’s while
Hastings threw for 172 yards and a touchdown. In addition, David
Gaylord put together a multi-faceted performance that will be
remembered within the Lynden football program for years to come.
Gaylord threw 1 pass for 80 yards and 1 TD, caught 4 passes for 62
yards and 1 TD, and also ran the ball effectively in short yardage
situations while compiling 35 yards rushing. On defense, the Lions were
led by Jr. (DE/WR) Ryan Seto, Jr. (S/RB) Brett Bajema, and
Blair Bomber once again at his usual cornerback position.
Lynden faces the Prosser Mustangs for the second
year in a row this Saturday in the Tacoma Dome. Coach Curt Kramme will
be vying for his 3rd State Championship while the Lions will
be hungry to avenge a 47-30 defeat last year against Prosser that ended
Lynden’s season in the State Semifinals.
